Our virtual reality is here for a while; it’s no longer just a temporary inconvenience.
It begs the question: How do you as a leader lead optimally in these virtual times? If this is the new normal, then I believe it becomes essential to be very deliberate about how you think about this.
The Bigger Picture
A key concept is the reality of the system. And this concept has huge implications for virtual leadership. The systems that we’re part of significantly impact how we show up inside of them and, conversely, lead within them. Consider the following thoughts:
- We’re not just random automatons floating around; we’re part of larger entities (i.e. your teams, the EC, the organization).
- External and internal threats can raise the level of anxiousness in the system. (For example, the current Pandemic.)
- ·This anxiousness can cause anyone or all to react very automatically to the disruptions.
- And this automatic reactivity is very contagious, potentially disrupting the team.
The leader’s goal is to observe these dynamics and better manage themselves in the middle of all this. This, then, has a calming effect on the whole system and enables it to act more effectively.
Can all of this happen virtually? Absolutely! In fact, the remote dynamic can enhance it in some cases. For example, if I’m prone to distancing from people under stress then I can hide easily behind email and limited contact. And make no mistake, distanced leaders can amp the system up. It’s a void and people feel it!
So I ask:
- How are you influencing this virtual system?
- Are you present-and-accounted-for?
- Are you amping-up the system? Or are you a calming virtual presence?
