We recently conducted a survey with one of our clients and asked them, “What’s working well for your team during these virtual times?” A common response was how effectively and quickly people have adapted to working virtually. And our own observation is that our clients are indeed very resilient!
There have been challenges, too. As expected, one of the main themes to show up from respondents is the reality of no daily physical contact. More than ever, we realize just how important that is to keep the wheels of daily productivity “greased.” Those accidental encounters in the hall or in the kitchen can serve a purpose, both personal and professional.
Most significantly, though, is the potential loss of camaraderie. Several noted that it’s been pretty good within their own teams, but that across teams it’s been much more difficult and very limited.
So, we challenge you to think about the following questions:
- How do you, as a leader, keep connected to the emotional system (especially cross-functionally) when more “usual” ways like “hanging out” are not available?
- What does a real connection look like in this new environment? When is it enough?
We encourage the leadership team to consider these questions. Don’t let virtual leadership “just happen”. Make it happen.
